It is one of the challenging tank to engage, its front hull is strong and will result in most rounds failing to punch through. This means its ammo rack is almost totally protected when ZTZ–99 is facing you. When engaging the ZTZ-99 front on, aiming for the turret housing is the better option. When aiming side on, the ZTZ-99 can be penetrated through its hull without much issue, including taking out its ammo rack. Unlike most tanks, the ZTZ-99 carries AGMs making it capable of getting a sneak attack from a distance and giving the appearance you're being attacked by an infantry TOW/HAT when that is not the case. When playing as ZTZ-99 its sabot main round should be preferred over its AGM because of its less consistent nature. As a driver, always ensure your front armor is facing the target, especially in this tank.
Created in 1970s for the United States Army, it is classified as main battle tank. Seeing use in several conflicts and countries over the last few decades.
